Living Water
Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Read
The longest private conversation Jesus has in any of the four Gospels happens at a well, in the middle of the day, with a Samaritan woman. That's worth a moment to take in. Not in the Temple, not with a learned teacher, not in front of crowds. At a well. With someone who had come alone to draw water in the heat of the day.
Read the chapter. It moves in three parts: a conversation that keeps opening into something larger, a woman who went and told everyone, and a father who trusted a word he had no proof for.

A surprising conversation (verses 1–26)
Jesus is travelling through Samaria — a region most Jews went out of their way to avoid. The history between Jews and Samaritans was long and sour: centuries of mutual contempt, religious disputes that never resolved, the kind of division that hardens into habit. They did not share eating vessels. They did not speak in public across that line.
Jesus sits at Jacob's well. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water. He asks her for a drink.
She catches the strangeness of it: "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (verse 9). He tells her that if she knew who was asking, she would ask him — and he would give her living water. She's thinking practically: you have no bucket. He means something else:
John 4:13–14Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
She says: give me that water. He tells her to go and get her husband. She says she has none. He tells her what she already knows: that she has had five husbands, and the man she is currently with is not her husband. She doesn't deny it.
What she does next is sometimes misread as changing the subject. She raises the religious dispute between their peoples: should worship happen on the mountain her ancestors used or in Jerusalem? It's a real question, and Jesus answers it directly: neither place is the point. "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth" (verse 24). The Messiah will explain all of this, she says. His answer:
John 4:26I who speak to you am he.
He says it plainly. To her. Before he says it to almost anyone else in this gospel.
She left her jar (verses 27–42)
The disciples return and say nothing, though John notes they were surprised to find Jesus talking to her. The woman leaves her water jar — she came for water, but something more urgent has come up — and goes back into town:
John 4:29Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?
The town comes out to see. While this is happening, Jesus talks with his disciples about harvest: the fields are ready, the work is happening now. The image is of a world far wider than anyone expected, open and waiting.
The Samaritans invite Jesus to stay, and he does for two days. Many believe because of the woman's testimony. Then they hear him for themselves, and they arrive at what no one else in this gospel has yet said:
John 4:42We know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.
Not the saviour of Israel. The Savior of the world. The first community in John's gospel to say that clearly was one that his tradition had written off.
A word is enough (verses 43–54)
The chapter closes with a second healing. A royal official comes to Jesus: his son is dying in Capernaum, some twenty miles away. He begs Jesus to come before the boy dies. Jesus says simply: "Go; your son will live" (verse 50). No journey, no gesture, no touch. Just a word.
The man believed and went. On his way home, servants met him with news: the boy's fever broke at the seventh hour — the exact hour Jesus had spoken. He and his whole household believed.
John marks this as the second sign. The first turned water into wine. This one gave life by a word, at a distance, to someone who had no proof except that word.
Take with you
The woman at the well had reasons to stay invisible. She came at the hour when no one else was there. She had a history she couldn't change, and a nationality that marked her off before she opened her mouth. Jesus found her, knew her, and stayed in the conversation.
She did not clean up her story before she told it. She went straight to her town and said: come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. That was her witness — not that she had everything right, but that she had been seen and not abandoned.
And the community that came because of her testimony was the first in this whole gospel to name him clearly: the Savior of the world. Not a phrase they borrowed. One they arrived at themselves, after two days of listening.
The official in the second story believed a word with nothing to show for it yet. He just walked toward home. That's the posture the chapter keeps asking for — not certainty, not proof first. A willingness to move on what you've heard.
